Contest #226 answer: Todai-ji Temple, Nara, Japan
This place, the Todai-ji temple complex, has it all. Not only it is a Buddhist temple complex, it also is an UNESO World Heritage site and the Great Buddha Hal is the largest wooden building in the world.
The complex has been struck by fire a few times, which caused rebuilding the Great Buddha Hal twice, the last time (1709) it was made some 30% smaller than its predecessor.
